Having no court music, classical Kurdish music is that of 'evbihêrk'
(night gatherings). Kurdish performers can be split into three categories: 'stranbêj'
(minstrels), 'dengbêj' (bards) and 'çîrokbêj' (storytellers). The stories, poems
and songs cover many genres and are often epic in nature: 'lawiks' tell the
tales of Kurdish heroes; 'heyrans' are melancholy love songs; 'lawje' is
religious music and 'payizoks' are songs to be sung in the autumn. Celebratory
songs ('dîlok' or 'narînk') are also popular.
